Prompt Smoke and Mirrors
This is in purple because that was his color

If you are feeling fragile, realize that this is emotional.

Requiem for Midian, My Brother in Bhride's Flame (Kevin Drewery)

Refrain:

Bhride, Bright Mantle, to cover us, shelter us

Bhride, Bright Fire, to heal us this day

Bhride, Bright Arrow, purify your dear Son in Your Flame

  1. Kevin, friend of my soul, heart, and spirit
Your time has finally run out
Twenty years you fought HIV valiantly
Four months decline, now it's done

  2. Gently, soon” I have prayed for your passing
You no longer shown from your eyes
Voice and language abandoned you early on
We never spoke while you died

  3. Attentive student, you learned from my husband
    Candlemaking as art
He mourns you now, expressing his feelings
    By crafting your Ancestor shield

  4. The flame we lit for you, Ruedy's, of course, my friend
Sits on our altar to Bhride
Your Watch we will keep in your honor consistently
As long as ever we live

  5. Purple camo will always remind me
There was a different sky in your world
    Legos, mandalas, sermons, and chalices
Your impact on me not yet plumbed

  6. I had not seen you in 6 years or 7?
    Your journey took you away
Every time I needed you, there you were
    I've always counted on that

  7. Smoke, a means of obscuring reality
    No permanence, value or worth
    Mirror, something to wonder at
    Reflecting you, an exemplary model

  8. Like smoke, my friend, you did not endure
You lived longer ill than in health
What you did in those years, how you lived your Truth
That's what I'll remember the most

  9. Go happily, join the love of your life
You've missed him day after day
My dear ones also are ready to welcome you
In that place I can only imagine

  10. All over the country, in various venues
    People are sharing their stories
Tears and laughter are measured out equally
From those you touched in your life

    Final Refrain:

Bhride, take Kevin into your Flame, peacefully
Cleanse him deep in your waters so wise
    Let him journey on
Knowing, at last, his true worth.

(This is a filk – new words, old music. I was up until 3 AM writing a letter that just spilled out, which I thought would be my entry. This morning, this happened instead. )

A fitting tribute. I'm currently reading a book on Pagan ritual, so I particularly enjoyed the structure of this piece.

I know your friend feels blessed.

This line pulled at my heart strings:

We never spoke while you died

Dying can be such a long, drawn out process, particularly for those with HIV/AIDS.

Beautiful work!

Hi there, I'm your editor for this week :).

This piece is a beautiful tribute for your friend. It's powerful because it is so personal, and is very moving. The following are some of my favourite lines:

Voice and language abandoned you early on
We never spoke while you died
- These lines are very emotionally evocative.

Your Watch we will keep in your honor consistently
As long as ever we live
- Gorgeous sentiment.

Let him journey on
Knowing, at last, his true worth.
- This is a beautiful and touching last line - perfect.

I admire you for having the courage to share something so personal with the community. Your friend would be proud of what you have written in his honour.

an edit for you
Hi Cedar,

I left a comment for you before I learned I was assigned to edit.

This is a difficult piece to edit, since it is so intensely personal. I will point out pieces I particularly liked, and one or two that didn't work for me entirely. Please know I respect this piece, its subject, and its creatrix.

Purple camo will always remind me

Beautiful, simply beautiful. YOu have captured two things here: a depth of intelligence and creativity in Kevin. and your own untested capacity to learn from that intelligence and creativity. What he stood for lives on in you, and you will continue to change because of it.

Like smoke, my friend, you did not endure
You lived longer ill than in health
What you did in those years, how you lived your Truth
That's what I'll remember the most

This makes me want to know what his truth was. This is not to say that something is missing in your writing, but that your writing begs for more writing. I think you have a lot of stories to tell about this man.

And one suggestion:

Twenty years you fought HIV valiantly

The words in this line are a little cumbersome. AS I mouth them, my tongue and lips trip. I wonder if changing the word order would help, or putting another word in for fought, valiantly, or both. Just a thought.

TThank you for sharing this piece and allowing your readers a small glimpse into someone who seems to have been brave, and smart and fun.

Blessings.
